On this page, we outline the basic definition of natural stones and clarify their scope.
Definition
Natural stones refer to minerals, rocks, or naturally derived materials that are formed over long periods of time in the natural environment.
Materials that are artificially synthesized through chemical processes are not considered natural stones.
What Is Included as Natural Stones
1. Mineral-Derived Materials
This category includes minerals that are formed through natural processes, such as crystallization underground.
Examples: Quartz, Amethyst, Fluorite
2. Rock-Derived Materials
Rocks composed of multiple minerals are also included as natural stones.
Examples: Jasper, Lapis Lazuli
3. Organically Derived Materials
This includes materials derived from biological sources or natural phenomena that are generally regarded as natural stones.
Examples: Amber, Coral, Pearl
4. Materials Not Included
1. Artificially Manufactured Materials
Materials like glass and resin, which do not occur naturally, are not considered natural stones.
2. Chemically Synthesized Stones
Materials that are crystallized artificially using the same components as natural stones are classified as synthetic stones.
3. Imitations Not Made from Natural Materials
Imitations created to resemble the appearance of natural stones are not considered natural stones.
Processing and Treatment
Some natural stones undergo processing or treatment after mining, such as polishing, heating, or dyeing. These processes are performed to enhance appearance or to stabilize color and durability.
Regardless of whether such processing or treatment has been applied, materials that are naturally derived are considered natural stones.
However, stones that are artificially synthesized are not included as natural stones.
Regarding Nomenclature
1. Power Stone
Power stones are natural stones that are believed to have special effects on the mind, body, or luck. They are often used in accessories or interior items, and wearing or keeping them is thought to bring healing or help fulfill wishes.
While natural stones are valued for their material beauty, crystal characteristics, and rarity, power stones are appreciated primarily for their meanings, effects, and uses. All power stones are natural stones, but not all natural stones are considered power stones.
2. Gemstones and Semi-Precious Stones
Gemstones and semi-precious stones are categories of natural stones that are particularly valued for their beauty, rarity, and durability. While natural stones are appreciated primarily for their material properties, the terms “gemstone” and “semi-precious stone” are mainly used to indicate decorative value and for classification purposes.
1. Gemstones
Diamonds, rubies, sapphires, and similar stones are highly rare and durable, and are processed for use in jewelry. Among natural stones, they are particularly valuable, with emphasis placed on the beauty of the material, clarity, and hardness.
2. Semi-precious stones
Amethyst, rose quartz, lapis lazuli, and similar stones are natural stones that, while not as rare as gemstones, are used in jewelry and accessories.
